Rivera, Vuolo break records at UR meet

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior throwers Luis Rivera and Brandon Vuolo each broke school records Thursday as Nazareth's men's and women's track and field teams competed at the University of Rochester's Alumni Invitational at Fauver Stadium. The men's team placed 10th with 32 team points, while the women finished 11th with 25 points.

Rivera, who earned All-American honors in the weight throw during the indoor season, broke his own school record in the hammer throw for the second week in a row. He finished first at UR with a heave of 51.69 meters (169 feet, 7 inches). That was five inches farther than his best throw at last week's Emory Invitational.

Vuolo placed fifth in the shot put  and broke his own school record with a toss of 13.76 meters (45 feet, 1 3/4 inches). He also finished fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.14 meters (144 feet, 10 inches) and 14th in the discus with a distance of 34.03 meters (111 feet, 8 inches).

Other top performers in the men's competition included freshman Nick LaBarbera, who finished third in the 400-meter dash (:49.86) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (:23.60); junior Patrick Neureuter, who placed 17th in the 5,000-meter run (16:36.19); sophomore Matt Battaglia, who finished 21st in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best outdoor time of 4:17.54; and sophomore Jacob Murray, who placed 19th in the 800-meter run (2:04.21).

In the women's meet, freshman Kimmy Lovett finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:12.92 and freshman Emily Soeder was third in the high jump as she cleared 1.54 meters (5 feet, 3/4 inch).

Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 4:07.69. That group consisted of seniors Hannah Brackley and Michaela Gildemeyer and freshmen Samantha Goble and Andrea Larnard.  Goble and Brackley placed fifth and sixth respectively in the 800-meter run with times of 2:22.09 and 2:22.10. Gildemeyer also finished 15th in the 1,500-meter run (4:55.80).

Junior Gabrielle LeBihan returned to action after missing the entire indoor season with an injury. She finished 19th in the 5,000-meter run (20:11.80) and was followed to the finish line by junior Blair Meeson in 20th place (20:12.47).

Senior Sibongile Chisi finished ninth in the pole vault at 2.83 meters (9 feet, 3 1/4 inches) and junior Taylor Pierson finished 10th in the long jump at 5.08 meters (16 feet, 8 inches) and 11th in the 200-meter dash (:27.94).
