Nazareth splits doubleheader with Houghton

Golden Flyers fall in game 1 9-8 in 10 innings; win game 2 10-3

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Nazareth rallied to win the second game of an Empire 8 Conference softball doubleheader 10-3 against host Houghton on Saturday. In the first game, the Highlanders scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday to defeat the Golden Flyers, 9-8. The Golden Flyers pounded 10 runs and 10 hits in the final three innings to win the second game.

With the split, Nazareth stands at 13-17 overall and 4-10 in the Empire 8. The Highlanders finish Saturday with a record of 5-26 overall and 2-10 in conference games.

In the second game, the Golden Flyers surrendered a run in the second, third and fourth innings to allow Houghton to an early 3-0 lead. Nazareth closed the game with three runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth, and four runs in the seventh to overwhelm the Highlanders.

Junior Morgan Ross finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, and sophomore Meghan Barry was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs to lead Nazareth's offensive attack. Sophomore Emily Graham, junior Maureen Rogers, freshman Stephanie Mongelli, and Barry each had a double. Graham leads the team with eight doubles on the season. Graham, Mongelli, Barry, and sophomore Nicole White each had two hits. Rogers entered Saturday's games leading the team in hits with 30. Senior Sophia Rhoades and Ross had 28 and 27 hits, respectively, entering the weekend.

Senior Nicole Bayona earned the victory to improve to 5-6 on the season. She scattered six hits in seven innings and allowed two earned runs. She also struck out two batters.

Sarah Beirne pitched the first five innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Jessica Hayner ended up taking the loss, falling to 2-9 on the season, after she allowed three runs and four hits in the sixth inning. Morgan York closed the game and allowed Nazareth's four runs in the seventh. In the first four innings, Beirne held the Golden Flyers to two hits.

In the first game, Houghton's Adrean Tiffany singled home Jessica Hayner with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Hayner was the winning pitcher after entering the game in the fourth inning. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run over the final six-plus innings. White took the loss for Nazareth despite allowing just five hits and striking out four over 8 1/3 innings.

Mongelli went 5-for-5 for Nazareth with six runs batted in. Graham and Rogers each had three hits. Mongelli's batting line included three doubles.

The game was tied 6-6 when Nazareth scored in the sixth to force the game to extra innings. Mongelli ended up doubling home Carly Pike with the tying run.

The Golden Flyers are in action again on Sunday when Nazareth travels to RIT for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Golden Flyers host Oswego in a non-conference doubleheader on April 28th.
