Nazareth wins first two matches

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Nazareth defeated Cortland 3-2 (25-21, 29-27, 23-25, 15-25, 15-13) to begin the Golden Flyer Invitational with a 2-0 record. Nazareth defeated Sage in three sets(25-17, 25-14, 25-15) earlier in the day. Junior Kristi Custer recorded a match -high 17 kills, while junior Mallorie Clary had a school record 35 digs against Cortland.

Overall, Nazareth improved to 4-3, Cortland dropped to 3-3, and Sage tallied a 1-5 record after losing to Nazareth.

Also against the Red Dragons, senior Katelynn Reed had 12 kills, and freshman Amy Johnson added 11 kills. Reed also accumulated eight assisted blocks, and Johnson had seven assisted blocks. Senior Kate Zwickl had a match-high 47 assists, and sophomore Leah Farrell had contributed a match-high four aces.

Nazareth tailed 13-12 in the fifth set until Custer recorded three consecutive kills to give Nazareth the lead and end the game. Also in the final set, Custer finished with six kills and Reed finished with one kill and three blocks.

Custer had nine kills in 15 attempts for a .533 hitting percentage to lead Nazareth to a 3-0 victory over Sage Colleges to open the Golden Flyer Invitational.

Nazareth cruised through three sets thanks to Farrell's seven kills,  Zwickl's 29 assists, junior Megan Roger's four aces, and sophomore Ashlee Travis' three aces. In addition, freshman Jenee Vanderstyne tallied 16 digs and three aces.

Sage was led by Sarah Peacock who recorded a team-high eight kills and Kelsey Wilson who accumulated 15 digs.

Nazareth plays Allegheny Saturday at 10:00am in the second day of the Golden Flyer Tournament.
