Nazareth throttles Elmira, 18-7

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman Maeghan O'Brien scored a career-best four goals and added one assist Saturday as host Nazareth dominated Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse match by winning 18-7.

Nazareth won for the second time this week at home to improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Elmira is 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the E8. Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule this week with a pair of conference games. The Golden Flyers visit Utica Wednesday at 4 p.m. and are home Saturday to host Alfred at 3.

The Golden Flyers had decisive statistical advantages Saturday, including a 43-19 edge in shots and a 22-3 advantage in draw controls. In addition to O'Brien, senior Kate Rothrock contributed three goals and one assist and senior Gabbie Charles also scored three times.

A pair of goals by Charles and one each from Rothrock and Haley DeVona staked the Golden Flyers to a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Nazareth then closed out the half by scoring eight of the last nine goals, including a free-position goal by Charles with :02 left to extend the lead to 12-2.

O'Brien scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Rothrock to make it 5-1, then senior Jamie Martin scored her 30th goal of the season just 32 seconds later. Rothrock and Haley DeVona both scored again. Junior Katie Carroll and senior Nicole DeVona also scored in the first half.

O'Brien scored three more times in the second half to keep the clock running and senior Leah Marvin added a pair of goals. Rothrock added her third goal of the game and 31st of the season on a free-position shot late in the half.

In addition to her three goals, Charles had five draw controls as did Nicole DeVona.

Sophomore Brianna Rizzari played the first 30 minutes in goal and had two saves. Junior Mackenzie Corbett played the final 30 and had one save.
