ROCHESTER, NY – Junior
Haley DeVona scored from just outside the goal crease 1:15 into overtime to propel Nazareth to an 11-10 victory of No. 19 St. John Fisher Wednesday under the lights.
Kate Rothrock pulled out a free position shot and found DeVona beside the goal for the winning shot.
Nazareth improves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in Empire 8 play, while Fisher falls to 6-4 and 1-3, respectively.
Haley DeVona also scored the game-tying goal with under five minutes remaining in regulation to help send the game to overtime. The Minoa, NY native heaved a shot passed Fisher's goaltender as she was falling to the ground.
Nazareth appeared to be in jeopardy late, picking up a penalty with just over two minutes to play. Goaltender
Brianna Rizzari made a crucial save with :23 seconds remaining on a Fisher shot from eight-yards out to preserve the tie. Rizzari made eight saves in the win.
Coming out of the half tied 6-6, Nazareth's lone lead of the second came after a goal from Rothrock at 16:30 to make it 8-7.
Fisher notched two straight goals, followed by Rothrock tying the score at 9-9.
After Fisher scored the first three goals of the game,
Bridget Collins converted a free position goal nine minutes in to make it 3-1.
Following a Fisher goal, Nazareth's
Jamie Martin scored her first of three goals in the half off the free position.
With the score 5-2, Nazareth pushed forward to score the next four goals and take a 6-5 advantage. Martin scored midway through the half from Rothrock and later from
Nicole DeVona to make it 5-4.
Rothrock evened the score a five apiece with 6:32 remaining. Later, the senior threaded a beautiful pass to
Nicole DeVona to give Nazareth a short-lived lead. It was 6-6 at the half. Rothrock chipped in three goals and three assists in the win.
