UTICA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's track and field team won three events Saturday to post a third-place finish in the team standings at the Empire 8 Indoor Championships at Utica College's Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
Ithaca won the team title with 218 points, while St. John Fisher finished a distant second with 84 points. Nazareth was next with 63, followed by Utica (42), Stevens (35), Houghton (16) and Alfred (6).
Ithaca also won the men's team title with 123.5 points. Utica finished second (106), followed by St. John Fisher (88), Stevens (85.5), Alfred (36), Houghton (16) and Nazareth (10).
Nazareth's women's team had several strong showings, paced by junior
Emily Soeder, who broke her own school record in the high jump with a first-place leap of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches). Nazareth also finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run with senior
Emily Thompson and junior
Claire Ludington posting times of 18:41.01 and 18:46.16 respectively.
Other highlights included a first-place finish in the 4 x 400-meter with the foursome of
Cassie Ellis,
Sarah Williams,
Maria Staehr and
Samantha Goble posting a winning time of 4:09.79.
Staehr also competed for Nazareth in the distance medley relay that finished second in 13:05.42. She was joined by
Eileen Shea,
Andrea Larnard and Ludington.
Goble also finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.89 and sophomore
Alycia Atwell-Chwazik posted a personal-best leap to finish second in the triple jump. She soared 10.85 meters (35 feet, 7 1/4 inches). Nazareth also gained a team point in the pole vault as
Emily Pawlowski finished sixth by clearing 2.65 meters (8 feet, 8 1/4 inches).
In the men's meet, senior Matt Battaglia accounted for all 10 of Nazareth's team points by winning the 800-meter run with a facility-record time of 1:56.35.
Nazareth competed without junior Nick LaBarbera, a favorite in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. He was held out of the meet by Nazareth Coach
James Goss because of leg injury. In addition, freshman Edward Ely didn't finish in the 400-meter because of a leg injury.
