ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Sarah Papponetti hit a walk-off home run in game one and junior
Rachel Mertens tossed a shutout in game two Sunday as host Nazarerh swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from RIT by scores of 4-3 and 8-0.
Nazareth evened its overall record at 17-17, while RIT is now 13-17 overall. Nazareth is on the road Tuesday for another non-conference doubleheader at Cortland.
In the first game, the score was tied at 3-3 when Papponetti stepped to the plate leading off the bottom of the seventh inning and socked a solo home run that enabled the Golden Flyers to walk off with the win. It was her second home run of the season.
Papponetti's homer was one of nine hits for Nazareth in the first game. Senior
Maureen Rogers had three hits and scored twice and sophomore
Stephanie Mongelli drove in Nazareth's other three runs to back strong pitching from junior
Nicole White, who improved to 7-9.
After RIT scored twice in the first inning, Nazareth countered with two runs. After the first two hitters were retired, Rogers reached on a single and advanced to third when
Carly Pike reached on an error. Both runners scored on a double by Mongelli. Nazareth added a single run in the third after a lead-off double by Rogers, who advanced to third on an error and scored on a bunt by Mongelli.
RIT tied the score again with a run in the fourth and the score went unchanged until Papponetti stepped up in the seventh. White had six strikeouts on the pitcher's mound for Nazareth and scattered seven hits.
The second game ended after five innings as Nazareth banged out 11 more hits, including two each for
Meghan Barry and
Morgan Ross.
The Golden Flyers erupted for six runs in the first inning on six hits.
Marissa Tortora doubled with one out and scored on a single by Rogers. Pike walked and two runs came home on a double by Mertens. After
Annika Guiliano walked,
Delaney St. George and Barry followed with run-scoring singles. St. George later scored on a single by Ross.
Nazareth added single runs in the third and fourth innings on run-scoring singles by Ross and Barry respectively.
Mertens pitched for Nazareth and gained her ninth win by scattering nine hits and striking out three. RIT had runners on base in each of the first four innings and left a total of eight runners stranded.
