ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman
Marissa Tortora delivered a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, providing Nazareth a 5-4 game two win as the Golden Flyers swept visiting Geneseo Wednesday night. Nazareth won game one by a 4-1 score.
Nazareth improves to 11-7 on the season, while Geneseo drops to 9-11.
Game 1: Nazareth 4, Geneseo 1
Nazareth benefited in the opening inning from an error to score two runs.
Carly Pike tripled to score
Sarah Papponetti and
Stephanie Mongelli drove her in as the very next batter.
In the third inning,
Rachel Mertens singled with the bases loaded to score two runners and give the hosts a 4-0 advantage.
Nicole White got out of a no out, bases loaded jam in the fourth inning to keep the score at 4-0.
White allowed just one run in the game which occurred in the fifth inning. She surrendered just four hits, while striking out four in five innings before being relieved by
Madison Zeis.
Zeis kept a clean slate in two innings to earn the save, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
White improves to 4-4 on the year with the win.
Mertens (2-for-2) and
Morgan Ross (2-for-4) each registered two hits.
Game 2: Nazareth 5, Geneseo 4 (8 innings)
Trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning,
Ann Stull came up clutch with a single to center field, scoring
Maureen Rogers to send the game into extra innings.
After Mertens shut down the side, Ross walked to start out the bottom half. With runners at first and second, Mertens hit a single to load the bases. That set up Tortora for the walk-off single with two outs.
The Golden Flyers started strong in the nightcap, with Pike launching a three run shot in the first inning. It was Pike's first home run of the year.
The Knights evened the score in the third with a three run inning.
Geneseo took its first lead of the day in the fifth inning on a throwing error to go ahead 4-3 but the Golden Flyers were able to rally.
Tortora matched a career high with three hits (3-for-5). Pike, Rogers, and
Meghan Barry each notched two hits apiece.
Mertens went the distance on the mound to improve to 6-3 on the year. She allowed four runs (two earned), on eight hits, while striking out three.
Nazareth returns to action on Thursday, when it will travel to the University of Rochester for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
