Softball Drops Pair of One Run Games

Fort Myers, FL – Nazareth dropped a pair of one run games on Thursday in heartbreaking conclusion, with each ending in walk-off fashion.  The Golden Flyers fell in eight innings, 5-4, in game one against Bridgewater State before falling 2-1 to Wilmington College (Ohio) in the nightcap.

Nazareth falls to 4-4 on the season.

Game 1 – Bridgewater State 5, Nazareth 4 (8 innings)

Nazareth, the visiting team, opened up extras with three runs in the eighth.  Maureen Rogers moved Sarah Papponetti along on a sacrifice bunt.  The very next batter, Stephanie Mongelli reached on an error, allowing Nazareth to score its first run of the inning.

Nazareth then cashed in on a Rachel Mertens inside-the-park home run to clear the bases and bring the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom half, the Bears reached on a throwing error to start the inning, allowing the runner to score from second.  After two RBI singles and a runner on third, Courtney Leddy hit a slow rolling ball to second base and beat out the throw on a slide to allow the winning run to score.

Nazareth trailed 1-0 until the sixth inning when Mertens connected for a double to score pinch runner Miranda Maldonado.

Nicole White dropped to 2-2 on the season with the loss.  She allowed five runs (3 earned), while striking out four.

Mertens finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Game 2, Wilmington 2, Nazareth 1

After Mertens got the first batter out in the seventh, Sydney Kelly reached base on an error.  Following a sacrifice bunt, Kelly advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  That set up the game-winning hit, as Taylor Hill slid into first to earn an infield single and score the run.

Nazareth scored its only run of the game in the top half of the seventh.  Marissa Tortora doubled and was brought in by a sacrifice fly from Papponetti.

For the game, the Golden Flyers left eight runners on base.

Mertens was tabbed with the loss in the circle after allowing six hits, 2 runs (0 earned), and striking out five batters.

Tortora was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, while Morgan Ross was 2-for-3.

Nazareth closes out its Spring Break trip on Friday when it will square off against Albion (Mich.) at 9 a.m., followed by Wisconsin-Lutheran at 11 a.m. – both in Naples, FL.
