Updated statsBROCKPORT, NY – Nazareth opened up its 2014-2015 season this afternoon with a 60-47 win over Sage Colleges at the Golden Eagle Tip-Off Tournament.
Nazareth jumped out to an early 10-0 lead.
Hannah Runyon opened up the scoring with a three-pointer just :17 seconds into the game followed by back-to-back layups from
Lindsey Kelly.
Veronica Peck capped off the scoring drive with a three-pointer with 16:29 to go.
Sage then called a timeout and stopped the scoring drive with their first made field goal of the game to make the score 10-2. The Golden Flyers then went on a 13-2 run which included five different scores to extend their lead to 23-4 with 11:54 left in the half.
Nazareth held a commanding 38-19 lead at half-time and shot an impressive 51.6% from the field. Kelly led Nazareth with 10 points in the first shooting 5-for-6 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds.
The Gators opened the second half with five straight points to make the score 38-24. The Golden Flyers stopped that drive and went on a 7-0 run to push ahead 45-24.
Nazareth held its largest lead of the game at 11:42 after a
Kelly Broderick three-pointer put them ahead 23 points, 50-27.
The Gators chipped away at the lead and came within 11 points with 2:02 remaining, 58-47 but were never able to get any closer as Nazareth held on for the 60-47 win.
Kelly led all scores with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Gators were led by Megan Bowman who finished with 14 points.
Sam Sorge and Runyon each scored nine points for Nazareth. Peck had seven and had a game-high six assists.
The Gators out-rebounded Nazareth 43-39.
Nazareth will face Brockport tomorrow at 2 pm. The Golden Flyers open up their home season next Saturday, November 22 at 2 pm when they host Fredonia.
