Nazareth outlasts Geneseo in 5

Golden Flyers (25-6) extend winning streak to 10 matches

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth held off Geneseo in a non-conference women's volleyball match Wednesday. Nazareth won in five sets by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 31-33, 28-26, 15-12.

The victory was Nazareth's second of the season over the Blue Knights, who dropped to 11-19 overall. Nazareth extended its winning streak to 10 matches and improved to 25-6 overall. The Golden Flyers close out their regular-season schedule with four matches this weekend at the New York Regional Challenge at RIT. Nazareth plays RIT and New York University Friday at 3 and 5 p.m. respectively, then Clarkson and St. Lawrence Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

Junior right side Kassandra Buseck had a match-high 17 kills and freshman Madi Wickens amassed 47 assists and six digs.

After winning Wednesday's first set, Nazareth was up 18-9 in the second set before Geneseo rallied to score 16 of the next 19 points to even the match. The third set was close throughout, but Nazareth had three set points only to watch Geneseo come back to take a 33-31 win.

Geneseo was up 25-24 in the fourth set, but Nazareth came back thanks to a kill by Buseck and service aces by Maureen Thayer and Katherine Race.

Nazareth controlled the fifth set by jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Geneseo rallied to tie the set at 11-11, but Nazareth sealed the win with a pair of kills by Buseck and one from sophomore middle Jennifer Hicks.

Juniors Olivia Harrigan and Maria Allocco played well for the Golden Flyers with 14 and 12 kills respectively. Thayer added four service aces and a match-best 15 digs.

Paige Pendleton had 13 kills for the Blue Knights and Erika Dannenfelser totaled 49 assists.
