Houghton defeats Nazareth at the buzzer

ROCHESTER, NY - Houghton's Marie Martuscello scored with just .6 seconds remaining to lift Houghton to a 52-50 win over Nazareth in women's basketball.  The Highlanders improve to 4-2, while Nazareth falls to 2-5.

Houghton maintained a lead throughout the entire first half  and were ahead 29-22 at the half.  The Highlanders Kristen Moose had 12 of her game high 16 points in the first half. 

Nazareth took its first lead of the night with 4:31 remaining in the second half.  Maria Allocco first tied the score 42-42 and after a Highlander turnover Veronica Peck put the Golden Flyers ahead with a three-pointer, 45-42.  The visitors regained a 46-45 lead at 2:01, after a Martuscello field goal.  Erica Shaw sunk her third three pointer with just :08 left to tie the score 50-50.  On the ensuing possession, Martuscello laid it in to give the Highlanders the win at the buzzer. 

Lindsey Kelly led Nazareth with 15 points, including 13 in the first half.  She also led the Golden Flyers with 11 rebounds. Shaw finished with 11 points (3-of-5 from behind the arc) and Peck chipped in eight points. Allocco had a game high 14 rebounds and was just 1-of-8 from the field.   

Nazareth out-rebounded the Highlanders 47-37.  The Golden Flyers shot 31% from the field and Houghton shot 37%.

Nazareth travels to Morrisville on December 17 for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
