ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Michelle Cook and freshman
Alyssa Johnston each scored four goals for host Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers recorded their first Empire 8 Conference win in women's lacrosse with a 16-9 triumph over St. John Fisher.
Nazareth never trailed in the game as the Golden Flyers improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. Fisher fell to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The victory was Nazareth 12th against Fisher in 13 meetings.
Nazareth scored the first four goals of the game and six of the first seven to take control early. Freshman
Megan Cregan won the opening draw control and raced down the field and score unassisted just nine seconds in the game for the Golden Flyers. Junior
Jennifer Young scored exactly two minutes after that to give Nazareth a 2-0 advantage. Cook followed with a pair of unassisted scores to extend the lead to 4-0.
After Fisher scored, junior
Kristine Olijnyk and Johnston followed with goals to make the score 6-1. The Cardinals countered with three straight goals to close within 6-4, but that was as close as Fisher would get as Nazareth scored three more times before the first half ended to make the score 9-4 at the break. Johnston scored twice in that stretch and senior
Stephanie Cash contributed an unassisted score with 1:09 left in the half.
Cook and Young each scored twice for the Golden Flyers in the second half as the lead continued to grow. Johnston also had a goal as did freshman
Erinn Wood and senior
Alyssia Roberts.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (43-32), ground balls (19-17) and draw controls (18-9). Cook won four draws and defender
Melissa Cignarale and senior
Nora Davis each had three ground balls.
Nazareth goalie
Ann Sessler made 15 saves while Vicki Sahm had 19 for Fisher. Lauren Glavin scored four goals for the Cardinals and Ashley Fenyn had two goals and one assist.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule this weekend with road games at Alfred Saturday at 1 p.m. and Utica Sunday at 1 p.m.
