Nazareth rally edges Stevenson, 11-10

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Freshman Alyssa Johnston scored the game-winning goal with 4:50 left in the game Wednesday to lift 20th-ranked Nazareth to an 11-10 victory over Stevenson in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played at Lake Lytal Park.

Johnston's goal was her second of the game and sixth of the season and came unassisted to snap the 10-10 and boost the Golden Flyers' overall record to 3-0. Nazareth goalie Ann Sessler made three of her 10 saves in the final four minutes as Stevenson dropped to 6-2 overall.

Johnston's first goal of the game came with 22:09 left and gave Nazareth a 9-7 lead. Stevenson, however, answered by scoring three straight goals -- two by Megan Weiss -- to take a 10-9 lead with 9:56 left.

Junior Kristine Olijnyk scored just 19 seconds after Weiss to tie the score at 10 and set the stage for Johnston's game-winner.

The game was close throughout with Nazareth securing 3-1 and 4-2 leads in the first half before Stevenson rallied to take a 6-5 lead with 4:41 left in the half. Freshman Erinn Wood scored for Nazareth off an assist from Megan Cregan with 3:29 left in the half to tie the score at 6-6 at the break.

Nazareth then scored three of the first four goals of the second half to go up 9-7. Olijnyk scored unassisted early in the half to give Nazareth a one-goal advantage. After Weiss scored on a free-position shot for Stevenson, Nazareth took a 9-7 lead on goals by Michelle Cook and Johnston.

Eight different players scored for the Golden Flyers, including Johnston, Olijnyk and Jennifer Young, who had two goals each. Olijnyk also had three ground balls and two draw controls. Alyssia Roberts, Cregan and Chelsey Amidon also scored for Nazareth in the first half.

Nazareth had a 26-25 advantage in shots and a 12-11 edge in draw controls.

The Golden Flyers play again Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against Fredonia in a game that was rescheduled from Monday.
