BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Host Medaille outlasted Nazareth in a wild, five-set match Tuesday to hand the Golden Flyers an upset loss in their season-opening men's volleyball match. Medaille won by scores of 24-30, 36-34, 28-30, 30-28, 23-21.
Nazareth came into the match ranked seventh nationally in Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, while Medaille was unranked. Nazareth also had a 17-match win streak snapped against North East Collegiate Volleyball Association opponents.
Sophomore
Billy Gimello posted 19 kills for Nazareth and junior
Hans Schroeder had 15, while senior setter
Kevin Kirchhoff amassed 55 assists. Freshman
EJ Wells-Spicer contributed 12 digs.
Medaille, meanwhile, snapped a seven-match losing streak against the Golden Flyers as sophomore Nick Johnson had 19 kills and seven digs. Senior Ryan Metz added 17 kills and Ryan Murdie had 16.
Nazareth plays three matches this weekend at the Stevens Invitational in Hoboken, N.J. Nazareth plays Stevens and Newbury Saturday and Hunter Sunday.
