Nazareth falls to Newbury in five games

MAHWAH, N.J. -- Sixth-ranked Nazareth, seeded second in the NECVA Tournament, fell to sixth-seeded Newbury in five games 25-30, 30-28, 22-30, 30-24, 15-13. Junior Joe Petzoldt and senior Tom Maving led the Golden Flyers' attack with 25 kills and 20 kills respectively.

With the loss, Nazareth finishes the 2008 season with a 28-7 record. Newbury improves to 30-9 overall and advances to play 10th-seeded Eastern Mennonite in the NECVA semifinals.

After trading victories in the first four games, the Golden Flyers built a 13-9 lead in the fifth game. However, Newbury rallied to record six consecutive points to win the game and steal the match.

In addition to the kills from Petzoldt and Maving, senior Kellen Gambeski added 16 kills and junior Ryan Johnsen finished with six kills. Gambeski also finished with a match-high six service aces and added four blocks, including two solo blocks. Junior setter Frank Leahy tallied 60 assists while junior Chris DeHority had a match-high 13 digs. Senior Adam DiCicco, Petzoldt, Maving, and Leahy also each recorded five digs.

Erik Kostanski led Newbury with 25 kills while Bryan McDermand and Mark Thomas added 19 kills and 15 kills respectively. Setter Matthew Talamantes recorded a match-high 62 kills while LeRoy Cooper finished with a match-high eight blocks. Timothy MacMillan tallied a team-high 10 digs while McDermand had nine digs and Michael Biuso contributed eight digs for Newbury.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Frank Leahy, a junior setter, and Tom Maving, a senior outside hitter, have each been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division III All-American team. Leahy and Maving were each second-team All-American selections as they helped Nazareth to a 28-7 record.
