Nazareth alum Paul Waida became head coach of the Golden Flyers’ men’s and women’s tennis teams in January of 2005 following the retirement of long-time coach Annette Shapiro.
He now is in his third season coaching the women’s team and his fourth with the men’s team.
He guided the men’s team to an 8-6 record in his first season, which included a third-place finish in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. They followed that with back-to-back 9-6 finishes in 2006 and 2007.
In his two previous seasons coaching the women’s team, Waida has led the Golden Flyers to records of 10-7 and 10-9 overall with runner-up finishes in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament both times.
A Rochester native, Waida is a 1989 Nazareth graduate and played tennis for four seasons. He was Shapiro’s assistant coach for the three seasons.
Waida’s tennis coaching experience includes 10 seasons as had coach at Pittsford Sutherland High School and working as a teaching professional at Monroe Golf Club, the University of Rochester, the Harley School and Mendon Ponds Tennis and Swim Club.
Waida has a degree in Studio Art and is a K-12 certified teacher.
ASSISTANT COACH:
Marie Kerns
Marie Kerns is back for her fifth season as a part-time assistant tennis coach.
Her experience includes part ownership of Tennis Heaven in Pittsford. Her responsibilities included budgeting and bookkeeping as well purchasing and pricing inventory.
At Nazareth, Kerns also is involved with gym scheduling and has assisted as Nazareth's athletic office coordinator.
ASSISTANT COACH:
Ben Klempka
The all-time winningest player in Nazareth’s men’s tennis history, Ben Klempka is back for his third season as a part-time assistant coach.
A native of Cortland, Klempka graduated from Nazareth in 2005 with degrees in business administration and psychology.
As a tennis player, Klempka shattered Nazareth’s all-time wins record, playing mostly first singles and first doubles. He won 71 singles matches and 76 doubles contests for a total of 147. He also was a three-time first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star in singles.
