POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Nazareth salvaged a split in a pair of non-conference women's volleyball matches Saturday. The Golden Flyers dropped a four-set match to host Vassar in the morning, then rebounded to sweep Western Connecticut State in a three-set match in the afternoon. Scores against Vassar were 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22. Winning scores against Western Connecticut State were 25-12, 25-19, 25-23.
Nazareth is 11-6 overall, while Vassar stands at 13-3 and Western Connecticut at 4-13.
In falling to Vassar, Nazareth dropped a four-setter for the second time in a row. The Golden Flyers also won the first set against Geneseo Friday before falling in four.
Against Vassar, junior
Madison Joseph paced the Golden Flyers with 16 kills and freshman libero
Savannah Bothner amassed a career-high 35 digs. Joseph had five of her kills in the opening set and Bothner had nine digs as the Golden Flyers took the early lead.
Nazareth led 13-10 in the second set, but couldn't hold on as Vassar rallied. It was 19-19 when the Brewers got back-to-back kills from Devan Gallagher and Bria Corham to take the lead for good. Colette Camby had four kills and Gallagher added three more as Vassar took the third set. Gallagher and Lauren Ninkovich each had four kills in the fourth set for Vassar.
For Nazareth, junior
Kelsey Milligan contributed nine kills and
Jessica Barry totaled 28 assists.
Against Western Connecticut, Milligan had nine kills and
Celia Cordero and Barry each had 15 assists. Bothner had 13 digs. Nazareth dominated the first two sets, then came from behind to take the third as Milligan and freshman
Regan McGwin each generated four kills.
Nazareth plays its first home match of the season Wednesday against St. John Fisher at 7 p.m.
