ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Brockport scored two goals in the second half, including the game-winner in the 84
th minute to earn a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Nazareth Saturday at the 14
th annual Doug May Classic.
With the loss, Nazareth drops to 0-2 on the season, while Brockport improves to 2-0.
After a fairly even first half with Brockport holding a 7-6 edge in shots, the visitors established the better of play in the second frame to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
The Golden Eagles found the equalizer after a Brockport player was taken down in the box early in the half to earn a penalty kick.
Junior Quintin Volpe made good on the attempt, although Nazareth goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin was able to get a hand on the shot to the right post.
The pressure continued throughout the half, with a shot from Volpe clanking off the post and out in the 54
th minute.
With just six minutes remaining in the contest, Justin Mercer corralled a rebound in front of the net to push Brockport to its second win in as many days.
The Golden Flyers were doomed by failing to generate a shot in the second half of play.
Nazareth's
Matt Gasbarre scored his first collegiate goal in the 29
th minute. Fellow freshman
Dan Serpe threaded a pass through the midfield to Gasbarre, who took a touch and slotted a left-footed shot into the far post.
Wilkin made eight saves in net for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel to Cazenovia for a 4 pm contest.
