ONEONTA, N.Y. – Nazareth played a pair of five set matches on Saturday at the Hartwick Invitational, falling 25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 24-26, 12-15 in the opening game to Oneonta before upending King's (Pa.) College 25-19, 19-25, 29-31, 25-21, 15-10.
With the split Nazareth moves to 7-4 on the season.
Nazareth came out strong in the opening two sets against Oneonta, hitting .290 and .316, before dropping off to .156 in the third set.
Sophomore
Melissa Newcomb put down a career-high 15 kills on 26 swings for a .423 attack percentage. Also having a career-day was
Jessica Barry who had 52 assists.
Madison Joseph (14 kills) and
Delaney Martin (13 kills) had solid outings.
The Golden Flyers saved its best set for last, generating nine kills on 22 attempts with no errors (.409) to clinch the fifth set against King's.
Kelsey Milligan had a dominant performance in the middle with 11 kills on 17 attempts with no errors (.647).
Newcomb was once again efficient with 10 kills on 20 attempts (.450), while
Carmen Sapp led the Golden Flyers with 13 kills.
Barry dished out 27 assists and
Celia Cordero 24.
Savannah Bothner combined for 54 digs over the two matches.
Nazareth begins Empire 8 play next Saturday, traveling to Elmira for a tri-match that also includes Hartwick.
