GENEVA, N.Y. -- Host William Smith, ranked 20th nationally, dominated Nazareth Tuesday in a non-conference field hockey match as the Herons defeated the Golden Flyers 8-1.
Nazareth dropped to 1-4 overall, while William Smith improved to 4-1. Nazareth's next game is at home Saturday against Ithaca at 1 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Herons outshot Nazareth 37-6 and scored the first seven goals of the game, before Nazareth broke through. Sierramarie Fitzgerald scored two goals and added two assists and Fallon Adair and Hannah Wood each scored twice for the Herons.
Fitzgerald scored just 8:42 into the game, then Wood scored twice in a seven-minute stretch to give the Herons a commanding lead before the half. William Smith scored two more goals within a 32-second span early in the second half to extend the lead.
Nazareth finally scored with less than five minutes left as sophomore
Jennifer Hilts scored her team-leading fourth goal off an assist from
Emily Prescott. The goal originated off a penalty corner and Hilts converted on a blast from the top of the arc.
