ROCHESTER, NY – Eighth-ranked Rutgers-Newark scored three first half goals, including one in the final minute, to slide past Nazareth 3-0 Friday night at Golden Flyer Stadium.
After the season-opening loss, Nazareth drops to 0-1, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 1-0.
Nazareth will host SUNY Brockport at 4 pm Saturday.
Fresh off a record-breaking season in which the Scarlett Raiders advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III Championships, Rutgers-Newark established the better of play in the opening half.
The visitors took advantage of a free kick from 22-yards out in the 19
th minute. Stefano Muniz buried a right footed shot into the upper right corner to open the scoring.
Less than two minutes later, the Scarlett Raiders found the net again. Carlos Castro floated a ball in from the right flank that was headed in by Hubert Dul for the 2-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark added one more goal in the half with 22 seconds remaining to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Golden Flyers were able to ramp up the pressure in the second half, generating six of their eight shots for the contest.
Rutgers-Newark ended the match with a 19-8 edge in shots. Freshman

Matt Gasbarre each contributed two shots in the loss.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin returned to the cage after losing the final half of his freshman campaign due to injury. He made five saves in net.
