PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Recording her best time of the season, junior
Samantha Goble captured the individual title in the 800-meter run Saturday as the Golden Flyers track and field teams competed at the New York State Track and Field Championships at St. John Fisher.
Goble crossed the finish line in 2:17.44 to win the event by more than a second over Hamilton's Hanna Jerome. Goble's previous best this season was 2:18.62 at the Nazareth Invitational on April 9. Her win helped the Golden Flyers to a ninth-place finish in the team standings with 33 points. Ithaca won the meet.
Other top competitors for the Golden Flyers Saturday included senior
Emily Thompson, who placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 17:43.76 -- more than 20 seconds faster than her previous best time; sophomore
Alycia Atwell-Chwazik, who finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.90 meters (35 feet, 9 3/4 inches); and junior
Emily Soeder, who placed ninth in the high jump by clearing 1.47 meters (4 feet, 9 3/4 inches).
Sophomore
Eileen Shea finished 13th in the 1,500 meters (5:14.03) and Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay team of
Cassie Ellis,
Andrea Larnard, Goble and
Karly Keil finished seventh in 4:09.22.
Nazareth finished 13th in the men's meet with third-place finishes from junior Nick LaBarbera in the 400-meter dash and senior Matt Battaglia in the 800-meter run. LaBarbaera was clocked in :49.17 and Battaglia in 1:57.73. Each earned six team points. Nazareth totaled 13 points overall.
LaBarbera and Battaglia each ran in the 4 x 400-meter relay that finished ninth in 3:26.87. Jenoy Merchant and Jacob Murray also ran in that event. In the field events, junior Tyler Hancock finished 20th in the discus with a distance of 31.19 meters (102 feet, 4 inches).
