ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Twenty-nine team were in competition at sun-splashed Golden Flyer Stadium Sunday as Nazareth hosted the annual ROC City Track and Field Invitational.
No team scoring was kept, but Nazareth posted some strong individual performances, led by junior
Emily Soeder, who tied her own school outdoor record with a first-place finish in the women's high jump. She cleared 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3 3/4 inches) to equal the height she cleared last season at Moravian's Greyhound Invitational. She was also close to her personal best height of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) that she posted earlier this year at the Empire 8 Indoor Championships at Utica.
Junior
Sara Thomas also competed in the high jump and finished in eighth place by clearing 1.42 meters (4 feet, 7 3/4 inches).
Other top Nazareth performers included junior
Samantha Goble, who finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:18.62); senior
Emily Thompson, who placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:51.87; and sophomore
Alycia Atwell-Chwazik, who placed ninth in the long jump with a leap of 5.34 meters (17 feet, 6 inches) and 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 10.73 meters (35 feet, 2 1/4 inches).
Freshman
Cassie Ellis placed 15th in the 400-meter dash (1:02.76) and also ran in the 1600-meter relay that finished fifth in 4:12.78. Atwell-Chwazik, Goble and
Andrea Larnard also ran. Nazareth also ran seventh in the 3200-meter relay (10:26.79) with the foursome of
Eileen Shea,
Jessica Hernandez,
Claire Ludington and Thompson.
In the men's meet, junior Nick LaBarbera finished third in the 400-meter dash with a strong time of :49.13. He also ran in the 1600-meter relay that finished second with a time of 3:23.61. Nate Murad, Jenoy Merchant and Matt Battaglia also ran in that event.
Battaglia ran 1:57.47 to finish sixth in the 800-meter run and sophomore Jake Garbeck was 18th in the javelin with a heave of 40.10 meters (131 feet, 6 1/2 inches).
Junior Tyler Hancock finished 17th with a toss of 39.11 meters (128 feet, 3 3/4 inches) in the hammer throw, an event won by former Nazareth standout Luis Rivera, who ripped off a mammoth heave of 61.30 meters (201 feet, 1 1/4 inches).
