ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Alycia Atwell-Chwazik won a conference title in the triple jump and senior
Emily Thompson posted a personal-best time in the 5,000-meter run Saturday as Nazareth's women's track and field team finished in fifth place in the Empire 8 Conference Championships at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth finished with 53 team points to finish fifth. Ithaca, competing for the last time in the Empire 8, was the runaway winner with 281 points. St. John Fisher was second with 83 points, followed by Stevens (77), Utica (70), Nazareth (53), Alfred (13) and Houghton (10).
In the men's meet, Utica won the team title with 147 points. Stevens was second with 131 and Ithaca was third with 124. St. John Fisher (114), Alfred (44), Houghton (16) and Nazareth (13) also competed.
Atwell-Chwazik won the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 11.09 meters (36 feet, 4 3/4 inches), about a foot shy of the Golden Flyers' school record of 37 feet, 4 inches set last season by
Amanda Entress. Atwell-Chwazik also earned points for Nazareth by finishing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.17 meters (16 feet, 11 1/2 inches); fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.46; and third in the 4 x 400-meter relay in 4:08.44. Freshman
Cassie Ellis and juniors
Andrea Larnard and
Samantha Goble also competed in the relay.
Thompson shaved 10 seconds off her previous best time in the 5,000 meters as she finished second in 18:05.25. She also placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:52.69. Junior
Claire Ludington ran well in the 5,000 with a personal-best time of 18:45.67, good for fourth place. Senior
Jamie DiSalvo ran 13th in 20:16.22.
Other top performers included Goble with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:19.99); junior
Emily Soeder with a third-place leap in the high jump (1.52 meters, 4 feet, 11 3/4 inches); and Ellis with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:02.64). Larnard was ninth in the 400 (1:02.83) and sophomore
Eileen Shea was 10th in the 1,500 (5:09.43).
In the men's meet, junior Nick LaBarbera finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of :49.13 and senior Matt Battaglia ran fifth in the 800-meter run in 1:57.81. In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Jack Wessel continued to drop seconds with an eighth-place time of 4:12.13.
Junior Tyler Hancock was Nazareth's lone competitors in the throws and finished ninth in the hammer (39.01 meters or 128 feet); 10th in the discus (34.70 meters or 113 feet, 10 inches) and 12th in the shot put (10.97 meters or 36 feet). Sophomore Jake Garbeck finished sixth in the javelin with a distance of 42.31 meters (138 feet, 10 inches).
Nazareth placed fifth in both relays. Freshman Jervon Harrison, senior Jenoy Merchant, freshman Jacob Dougall and Garbeck ran the 4 x 100-meter relay in :45.34, while Battaglia and LaBarbera were joined by sophomore Nathaniel Murad and senior Jenoy Merchant in the 4 x 400-meter relay that posted a time of 3:27.04.
