Nazareth outlasts Ramapo, sweeps Medger Evers

MAHWAH, N.J. -- Nazareth's men's volleyball team won a pair of non-conference matches Sunday at Ramapo. The Golden Flyers recovered to take a five-set victory over Ramapo and then had little difficulty sweeping Medger Evers in the second match.

Nazareth improved to 15-8 overall by defeating Ramapo by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12 and Medger Evers by scores of 25-5, 25-10, 25-15.

Junior Sam Bittker posted a career-high 18 kills against Ramapo, including six in the decisive fifth set to lead the Golden Flyers. Nazareth had 10 kills in the fifth set with just two hitting errors on 24 swings. Sophomore Zachary Gillard contributed 14 kills and senior Kane Wittorff had 10. Junior Jake Kemp had 48 assists and senior Tom Keisling chased down 17 digs.

Nazareth trailed 9-6 in the fifth set before rallying. Bittker had three kills on Nazareth's final nine points to fuel the rally. Gillard, Wittorff and freshman Sean Dillon also had kills during the closing stretch.

After Nazareth dropped the first set, Gillard had five of the Golden Flyers' nine kills in the second set to even the match. Then in the fourth set, Wittorff had five kills on six swings and Bittker, Dillon and Gillard each had three to send the match to a fifth set. Wittorff also finished the match with five blocks and Gillard added four.

Nazareth dominated the Medger Evers match by knocking down 34 kills against just five hitting errors on 55 hitting attempts for a .527 percentage. Sophomore Trevor Gooch led the way with 10 kills on 12 attempts to go with six digs. Dillon added six kills and freshman Dan Shorney had five.

Nazareth is home Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month for a United Volleyball Conference match against Elmira at 7 p.m. The Golden Flyers have two more UVC matches next weekend as they travel to Poughkeepsie to face Vassar and NYU.
