FORT MYERS, FL – Senior
Rachel Mertens improved to 3-0 on the season Thursday to help Nazareth get revenge over Curry (MA) 8-2, before the Golden Flyers fell to Wilmington (OH) 11-2 in six innings.
Nazareth moves to 5-3 on the season. The Golden Flyers close out their spring break trip on Friday, starting with Crowne (MN) at 9 a.m., followed by North Central at 11 a.m.
Game 1 – Nazareth 8, Curry (MA) 2
Sophomore
Delaney St. George finished with three RBI in the game, including a two-RBI single in the second inning to get the Golden Flyers offense rolling. She was 3-for-3 in the game.
The Colonels threatened with bases loaded in the third with one out, however Mertens induced a pop up and ground ball for the final outs of the frame.
Curry left two more on in the fourth with Mertens striking out the final batter in the inning.
The Golden Flyers padded their lead in the fourth, scoring two more runs to make it 4-0. St. George nearly hit Nazareth's first home run of the year, settling for a double off the wall to score
Annika Guiliano.
Sarah Papponetti singled later in the inning to drive in the other run.
A four-run fifth off six hits provided Nazareth insurance. Guiliano,
Meghan Barry and
Marissa Tortora each had an RBI in the frame.
Tortora, Barry and Papponetti each had two hits in the win.
Mertens allowed one earned run on six hits, while striking out five.
Game 2 – Wilmington (OH) 11, Nazareth 2 (6 innings)
The Quakers (1-9) used a six-run sixth inning en route to an 11-2 win, its first win of the season. They had eight hits in the inning and 20 overall in the contest.
Marissa Hayes began the game on the mound, going two full innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Wilmington jumped out quickly in the game, plating three runs in the first inning.
Stephanie Mongelli smashed Nazareth's first home run of the season in the second, a solo shot to left center, to trim the score to 3-1 in the top of the third. She was 2-for-3 in the loss.
In the third inning, White took over pitching duties. The Quakers responded with a run of their own in the third to take a 4-1 advantage.
After Wilmington scored one in the fifth,
Jessica Mount started off the inning with a double and later was driven in by
Kristen Simmons.
Wilmington put the game out of reach in the final inning.
