ROCHESTER, NY – Host Nazareth stormed back to win sets three and four before MIT prevailed in the fifth to hand the Golden Flyers a 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 10-15 defeat Saturday morning in each team's first United Volleyball Conference match. The Golden Flyers came back to defeat Bard in three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-17.
Nazareth, ranked 11th nationally, is 9-6 overall and 1-1 in conference matches. MIT, which also defeated Bard in three sets is 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the UVC. Bard dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the UVC.
Senior
Tom Keisling registered a career-high 20 kills in the loss to MIT. He hit .472 on 36 attempts with just three errors. He also had 11 digs.
Nazareth gave away six points in the first to service errors. The Engineers led 20-15 before the Golden Flyers came within a point a forcing an extended set. Tavish Smith finished off the set with a kill.
In the second set, Nazareth was unable to overcome starting the match down 1-0 due to a red card issued from the previous set. With the match even at 20 apiece, MIT rattled off five of the next seven points to seal the set.
Nazareth was able to get back on track in the third set, jumping out to a 20-15 advantage and holding on late.
Nothing stopped the Golden Flyers in the fourth as they hit .520 - 16 kills on 25 attempts with just three errors. Keisling continued his stellar play with six kills in the set on seven attempts.
The Golden Flyers opened a 2-0 lead in the final set but could not string together points down the stretch.
Zachary Gillard notched 13 kills (.162), while
Kane Wittorff had 10 (.350).
Against Bard,
Kane Wittorff registered 11 kills in 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage. Gillard added eight kills and
Trevor Gooch had seven. Nazareth hit an impressive .456 (39-8-68) overall compared to a negative percentage for Bard.
