ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore
Brendan Wind continued his offensive dominance on Saturday, scoring over half of Nazareth's points (48) in a 103-93 double overtime loss to East Avenue rival St. John Fisher. Wind finished 17-for-27 from the floor and 14-of-17 from the free throw line, to go along with seven assists. The Rochester native has now scored a career-high in points in three straight contests during the week, totaling 115 points (29 vs Houghton, 38 vs Elmira, and 48 vs Fisher).
Nazareth drops to 15-8 with the loss and 9-5 in conference play, while Fisher improves to 17-5 and 12-1, respectively.
Trailing 69-68 with :21 seconds remaining in regulation,
Daniel Jacob was unable to convert his free throws. Following one-of-two free throws from Fisher on the other end, Wind pulled up from inside the foul line tie the game at 70 with just five seconds remaining.
Fisher's Tyler English ran the length of the court but was unable to convert a layup as time expired.
In the first overtime,
Cody Green picked an opportune time to hit his first 3-pointer, giving Nazareth a 73-71 margin.
Wind went 7-for-8 from free throw line over the final minute. He made the first of two free throws to go up 84-81 with :07 seconds to show before English hit a game-tying 3-pointer with :01 second remaining to send it to a second overtime.
Josh Gillard canned a 3-pointer early in the second overtime for a one point lead, however , the Cardinals regained the lead on the ensuing possession. They proceeded to outscore Nazareth 17-6 over the final 4:30 to earn the win.
The Cardinals scored the first 10 points of the game over four minutes to seize some early momentum. Nazareth chipped away behind the duo of
Daniel Jacob and
Tyler Stenglein, who scored 17 of the first 19 points for the Golden Flyers.
A jumper from Jacob near the six minute mark made it 27-18. He was a perfect 3-for-3 in the half.
Later in the half, Wind got in on the action. The sophomore scored Nazareth's final 11 points, the majority coming from foul line jumpers.
Fisher led 39-31 at the break.
Wind continued his stretch into the second, scoring the first six Nazareth points to push the total to 17 straight.
A bucket from Gillard at 17:03 made it 43-39 – it was Nazareth's first bucket from anyone other than Wind since the 5:07 remaining in the first half.
Nazareth took its first lead of the game at 68-67 with 1:45 to play on one-of-two free throws from Stenglein.
Stenglein went for 18 points (7-for-12) and eight rebounds. Burgio chipped in 10 points (3-for-4) and grabbed four rebounds.
Nazareth will travel to Hartwick on Friday and Stevens on Saturday to close out the regular season.
