ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's 2017 women's soccer season came to a disappointing end Friday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament at Hartwick's Elmore Field. The second-seeded Golden Flyers tied third-seeded Stevens, 0-0, but the Ducks advanced to Saturday's championship game by winning the post-game penalty kick session, 3-2.

Nazareth senior Paige Sullivan and freshman Miranda Timberlake were named to the Empire 8 All-Tournament team.

The Ducks will play top-seeded and host Hartwick in Saturday's title match at 6 p.m. Hartwick defeated Alfred, 3-0, in Friday's other semifinal match. Nazareth finishes 12-4-2 overall. Stevens is 11-3-3.

After 110 minutes of scoreless play, including 20 minutes of overtime, the teams resorted to penalty kicks to determine Hartwick's championship game foe. Megan Gallacchi and Timberlake delivered goals for the Golden Flyers, while Julia Panko, Emily Damrell and Sammy Mount scored for Stevens. Stevens keeper Lindsey Maknken saved bids by Paige Sullivan and Mary LoCicero, while another attempt by Elizabeth Guidi sailed over the goal. Megan Lynes had Stevens' lone miss.

The regular game was as close as the final score would indicate as each team generated scoring chances, but each goalkeeper -- Mahnken for Stevens and Hannah Miller  for Nazareth -- were equal to the challenge. Nazareth had a 22-19 edge in shots with Mahnken making six saves for Stevens and Miller seven for Nazareth.

Nazareth had a 7-6 shooting advantage in the first half with the best scoring chance coming in the 33rd minute on a high, arching shot by Mary Kate Ordway that ended in a tip-toe save for Mahnken. Miller had four routine saves in the first 45 minutes.

Stevens generated seven shots over the first 30 minutes of the second half, including one by Gabby Pagkalinawan in the 65th minute on which Miller made a diving save. Nazareth had a chance late in the half when Julia Delgatti raced up the right wing and crossed the ball to the middle, where a blast by Timberlake went wide left. Timberlake also had another left-footed blast in the closing minutes of regulation that was saved by Maknken.

Nazareth had six shots in overtime to five for Stevens. Delgatti had Nazareth's best scoring chance early in the first overtime, but Mahnken saved it.

Even though the game was Nazareth's fifth straight shutout, the penalty kick result was unsettling for the team, particularly the 11 seniors who competed for the last time.

"It was a great group," said Nazareth Coach Gail Mann. "I wanted to win so badly for them, but they gave their best and came up a little short."
