Volleyball Handles Fisher in Four Sets

ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's volleyball team, over halfway through the 2017 season, welcomed their first home game of the season with open arms Wednesday, as the Golden Flyers took down East Avenue Rival St. John Fisher, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15.   The Golden Flyers improve to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Fisher falls to 15-5 and 3-1, respectively.

Nazareth dominated the first set, putting down 13 kills on 31 attempts with just two errors (.355).  Kelsey Milligan had five of her game-high 12 kills in the opening set.

After falling 23-25 in the second set, Nazareth won by an identical score in the third.  The Golden Flyers looked to be in trouble, trailing 19-15, before a late run in the set propelled them to victory. Nazareth broke open a 23-23 tie with a service ace from Danielle Synowski, followed by an emphatic kill from Melissa Newcomb to close out the set.

Nazareth's momentum carried over into the fourth set, as the Golden Flyers jumped out to a 10-3 advantage and never looked back.  Savannah Bothner registered back-to-back service aces during the run – she finished with three service aces in the win and a match-high 14 digs.

Melissa Newcomb (.308) was credited with six kills in the win, while Madison Joseph added six of her own. 

Jessica Barry dished out 29 assists in the match. 

Celia Cordero contributed 11 digs for the Golden Flyers. 

Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Stevens for a Tri-match with the Ducks and Sage.
