Elmira, NY – The Nazareth field hockey squad closed out the 2017 season with a hard fought 2-1 loss to Elmira Saturday in Empire 8 action. Nazareth surrendered a one goal advantage with two goals in the final 12 minutes to fall victim to the Soaring Eagles.
The Golden Flyers finish the season 2-16 overall and 0-7 in conference play, while Elmira finishes 3-14 and 1-6, respectively.
Neither squad could find the net in the opening half, with the Golden Flyers holding a 10-6 edge in shots, while each team mustered five penalty corners.
In the second half,
Jessica Livesey ignited the offense with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Livesey received a pass at the arc from
Jennifer Hilts and beat the goalie to the far side for the 1-0 lead.
That goal held up until 58:40 when Megan Brian converted an opportunity in close to even the score at 1-1.
Elmira eventually scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining as Sarah McCaffrey tipped in a shot from Emily Selbert.
The final shots favored Nazareth 17-15.
Livesey had five shots, Hilts four and
Madison Bianchi three.
Kimber Nourse made seven saves in net to bring her season total to 247.
