ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore
Brendan Wind chipped in a career-high 25 points (11-for-18) to help Nazareth cruise to an 82-65 victory over visiting Hilbert Wednesday night at Kidera Gymnasium. He also dished out a game-high seven assists. Wind had a previous career-high of 16 points against Geneseo as a freshman.
Nazareth improves to 6-3 with the win, while Hilbert drops to 6-6.
The Golden Flyers showed little rust after not having game action since December 17. Wind hit a layup three minutes in to make it 8-2 in favor of the home team. He led the way with 11 points in the half.
Jake Burgio gave Nazareth its largest lead of the half at 30-15 with 4:20 on the clock after a successful layup.
Nazareth went 14-for-30 (46.7 percent) in the opening half to take a 34-20 advantage.
The Hawks were able to trim the lead to 11 points early in the second half, but were never able to bring the game to within single digits.
Daniel Jacob canned a 3-pointer with 8:59 remaining to make it 63-44 – that proved to be the Golden Flyers biggest lead of the day.
Hilbert worked to cut the lead to 11 once again at 72-61 with three minutes remaining, but a Stenglein 3-pointer on the ensuing possession slowed the run. He finished the game with 24 points on 9-for-18 from the floor. Stenglein also had eight rebounds and five steals.
Nazareth outscored the Hawks 10-4 to close out the game.
Chris Jones contributed nine points and five rebounds, while Burgio had eight and six, respectively.
Nazareth opens up conference play at Alfred on Friday at 8 p.m.
