Men's Hoops Wins Fourth Straight, Downs Alfred 83-65

ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's basketball squad stretched its win streak to four on Saturday after defeating Alfred 83-65 at Kidera Gymnasium.  Nazareth was able to avenge a loss to the Saxons earilier in the season when it fell 88-69.

The Golden Flyers improve to 12-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while Alfred drops to 7-11 and 4-5, respectively. 

Nazareth led 8-7 three minutes into the contest.  The Golden Flyers were able to build a double-digit lead, thanks to an 18-5 run over a nine minute span, to take a 26-12 lead with 7:37 remaining in the half.  Mitch Keniston put down a dunk during the beginning of the run and Cody Green tallied a 3-pointer.

Jake Burgio had a layup at 10:22 to push the lead to double-digits, a margin they would not surrender the rest of the game.

The Golden Flyers led 43-28 at the break.

A 3-pointer from Alfred's Nick Schmidt trimmed Nazareth's lead to 45-35 early in the second half, however, that was the closest threat the Saxons would mount.

The Golden Flyers lead ballooned to 62-41 following a Tyler Stenglein layup with 13:22 to play.  He finished the game 8-for-15 for 24 points – Stenglein went 8-for-9 from the free throw line.  He also had five assists.

Nazareth was red hot from the field in the second half, shooting 11-for-17 (65 percent).

Burgio continued his strong stretch of performances with 14 points (5-for-9) and 12 rebounds.  It was his third double-double of the season.  Brendan Wind also went for 14 points and dished out a game-high eight assists.

Chris Jones was an efficient 4-for-5 for 10 points.

Senior Jack Mulcahy got on the scoreboard, hitting a 3-pointer.

Nazareth hosts Ithaca at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
