ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore
Jake Burgio scored 15 of his career-high 20 points in the second half to propel Nazareth to a 74-65 victory over Hartwick Saturday at Kidera Gymasium. Burgio also grabbed 10 boards for his second double-double of the season.
Nazareth improves to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in Empire 8 play, while Hartwick drops to 11-6 and 4-4, respectively.
Burgio scored all five of his first half point early, including converting a traditional 3-point play. A layup from
Tyler Stenglein gave Nazareth its largest lead of the half at 16-7 with 14:25 on the clock.
The Hawks clawed back to 19-17 just over the midway point.
Cody Green drained a 3-pointer to slow the momentum and two free throws from Stenglein later in the half gave Nazareth a 28-18 lead.
Nazareth led 36-29 at the half.
In the second half, Hartwick managed to trim the Golden Flyers lead to just one point on three separate occasions, including 50-49 with 7:33 remaining.
Jake Burgio hit back-to-back buckets at the five minute mark. Shortly after, he dunked on consecutive possessions for a big momentum swing and 63-56 advantage with under four minutes to play.
Nazareth went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe over the final 2:40 to seal the victory.
Brendan Wind went 6-for-7 during that stretch from the line. He finished the game with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Stenglein contributed a game-high 22 points (6-for-14) with six rebounds and four assists.
Green and
Chris Jones each poured in six points.
Nazareth returns to action on Tuesday when it will travel to Elmira for an 8 p.m. contest.
