PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth made short work of St. John Fisher Wednesday in an Empire 8 Conference women's volleyball match as the Golden Flyers never trailed and cruised to wins in all three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-8, 25-12.
Nazareth improved to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference matches. Fisher is 6-10 and 2-1.
Nazareth was efficient throughout, using a .287 hitting percentage to dominate the Cardinals. Senior
Cady Messmer had a team-high nine kills against just three hitting errors in 22 attempts. Freshman
Melissa Newcomb had eight kills with one hitting error in 16 swings for a.467 percentage and sophomore
Carmen Sapp had seven kills in 16 attempts for a .438 percentage.
Other statistical highlights included 29 assists for senior setter
Maureen Thayer and four aces and 10 digs for sophomore libero
Celia Cordero. Thayer also had nine digs and freshman
Delaney Martin added eight.
Nazareth was in command throughout the match as the Golden Flyers scored the frist five points in the first set with two points coming on kills by Messmer. The lead swelled to 19-9 when Sapp and Newcomb teamed up for one of Nazareth's five blocks in the match.
In the second set, Nazareth scored the first 10 points, thanks to a pair of kills from Sapp and one each from Newcomb and Martin. The lead continued to grow to 15-1 and finally 25-8 as Newcomb closed the set with a kill.
In the third set, kills by Messmer and Newcomb and a service ace by Thayer enabled Nazareth to go up 4-0. The lead reached 19-10 on a service ace by Cordero and the match was closed out on a pair of kills by Messmer and one by freshman
Danielle Synowski.
Nazareth returns to action this weekend at the Skidmore Invitational. The Golden Flyers play Cortland Friday and Skidmore and Sage Saturday.
