Women's Lax Edges Stevens in Overtime, 10-9

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Gabbie Charles scored the game-winning goal 1:44 into overtime off an assist from Carly Gates to give Nazareth a 10-9 overtime win over Stevens Institute on Saturday. 

Stevens roared back from trailing 8-2 with 24 minutes remaining to tie the score at 9-9 with just :22 seconds left in regulation.

Nazareth won the opening draw control in overtime, allowing Charles to score on the lone shot in the extra period.

With the win, Nazareth improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play while Stevens falls to 7-6 and 3-2, respectively.

The Ducks scored two of the first three goals of the game, but Nazareth closed on five goal run to take a 6-2 halftime lead.

Haley DeVona found the back of the net off an assist from her sister Nicole DeVona at the 22 minute mark to even the score at 2-2.

Nicole DeVona scored her second of the game on a free position shortly after to give the Golden Flyers  the 3-2 edge.

Nazareth's offense kept momentum going with Kellie Byrne's first collegiate goal, assisted by Nicole DeVona.

The Golden Flyers added two more to open the half, unassisted goals from Gates and Suzie Gray. Stevens eventually broke its scoreless draught of over 30 minutes to cut the margin to 8-3 with 22 minutes to play.  

Stevens then scored six of the last seven goals and benefited from several Nazareth opportunities that hit the pipe.

Both Haley and Nicole DeVona, along with Rothrock, added two goals in the game.  Nicole DeVona also added two helpers. 

Gates added one goal and two assists.

Brianna Rizzari made eight saves to earn the win.

Nazareth returns to action next Friday when it will travel to Elmira College for a 5 p.m. contest.
