Golden Flyers improves to 10-3; host Houghton Tuesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Five different players scored three goals each for host Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated Hartwick in men's lacrosse, 20-9, at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Nazareth, ranked 18th nationally, won for the sixth time in the last seven games and improved to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8. Hartwick dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the E8. Nazareth has now beaten Hartwick 28 times in 29 meetings.

Senior Luke Wooters scored three times and added six assists for the Golden Flyers. Seniors Troy Haefele and Matt O'Neill also netted three goals apiece as did junior middie Luke Longo and sophomore attackman Paul Walter. Sophomore Jack Crowley also scored tiwce and added an assist and sophomore face-off specialist Seth DeLisle contributed his first career goal. Freshmen Anthony Basile and Parker Deuley also scored.

Nazareth started slowly with first-quarter deficits of 1-0 and 3-1 before evening the score at 3-3 after one quarter. The Golden Flyers seized control in the second quarter by scoring eight more times to take a 11-5 lead at the break. Hartwick closed to within 12-8 late in the third quarter, before Nazareth finished by scoring eight of the last nine goals to pull away.

Down 3-1 late in the first quarter, Nazareth scored twice in the final :58 second to tie the score. O'Neill scored unassisted with 58 seconds left, then Haefele assisted on Wooters' tying goal with just :01 left in the period.

In the second quarter, Nazareth scored four times in the first 2:22 of the period to go up 7-3 and never trailed again. First Qalter scored off a pass from Wooters and DeLisle won the ensuing face-off and scored unassisted just 16 seconds later. The next two goals -- by Wooters and Haefele -- came just eight seconds apart.

Nazareth scored three of the first four goals of the second half to pull within 12-8, but Longo and Walter each scored for Nazareth to send Nazareth to a 14-8 advantage after three periods.

In the fourth quarter, Longo scored twice and Wooters had his team-best 38th goal of the season for the game's final tally. Haefele, Crowley and Deuley also scored.

Nazareth dominated the statistical categories with advantages in shots (54-31), ground balls (41-26) and face-offs (24-8). DeLisle won 17 of 22 draws and scooped up 13 ground balls. Sophomore Gavin Shaner won 7 of 10 draws. Sophomore Jason Partridge had six ground balls and contributed an assist. Senior Scott Brown started in goal and played all 60 minutes and made 12 saves.

Nazareth honored its nine seniors before the game -- Brown, Haefele, O'Neill, Wooters, Connor McKercher, Nick Loscalzo, Vincent Loscalzo and Damond Archung.

The Golden Flyers are home again Tuesday to host Houghton in Empire 8 Conference action at 4 p.m.
