Updated StatsROCHESTER, NY – Nazareth outscored No. 7 Cortland State 9-2 in the second half to earn a come-from-behind victory, 13-9, Friday night over the Red Dragons. The Golden Flyers, fueled by eight points from
Luke Wooters (four goals, four assists) and four goals from
Troy Haefele, picked up their first win over the Red Dragons since 2007.
No. 15 Nazareth moves to 3-0 on the season, while Cortland falls to 1-1.
Nazareth scored the final four goals of the game.
Joe Eiskant came up big for the Golden Flyers, breaking a 9-9 tie with back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to push the Nazareth ahead 11-9 with 3:16 left on the clock.
Haefele gave Nazareth some cushion on the extra-man opportunity with 2:22 to play and
Paul Walter added another insurance goal in the waning seconds. Walter had two goals in the game.
Cortland held a 7-4 advantage at the break.
After going without recording a point in the first half, Haefele scored his first goal of the day early in the third and added another at the four minute mark with the helper from Wooters to trim the Red Dragons advantage to 8-7. Wooters, who scored in between the Haefele tallies, scored his fourth of the day with :04 seconds left in the third to even up the score heading into the final frame.
Nazareth took its first lead of the day on Haefele's third of the game less than a minute into the fourth quarter to give the home squad a 9-8 advantage.
In the first half, Cortland scored four of the first five goals, however Nazareth notched the final two of the quarter to claw within 4-3. Wooters scored Nazareth's second goal from
Hunter Burdick to cut the lead in half.
Matt O'Neill scored the final goal of the first off the feed from Wooters.
Wooters evened the score at four early in the second on an unassisted tally. The Golden Flyers would not score the rest of the half as the visitors found the net three more times, including one on the extra man advantage, to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
Eiskant finished his day with two goals and two helpers.
Scott Brown made 10 saves in net for Nazareth.
Seth DeLisle was 18-of-25 on face-offs.
Nazareth travels to Tampa, FL for its Spring Break trip on Monday. The Golden Flyers will square off against Clarkson on March 12 at 3:30 p.m. at the University of Tampa.
