Nazareth dominates Elmira in E8 opener, 17-4

Golden Flyers (6-2 overall) host St. John Fisher Saturday

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored the first 10 goals of the game Saturday and were never seriously challenged in a men's lacrosse game against Elmira as the Golden Flyers won 17-4 in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.

Senior attackman Luke Wooters moved eight points closer to the Golden Flyers' career scoring record as he accumulated five goals and three assists. Sophomore attackman Paul Walter added three goals; junior midfielder Luke Longo and freshman attackman Jack Crowley each scored twice. Ranked 13th nationally, Nazareth improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Elmira is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the E8.

Already Nazareth's all-time leader in career goals with 167 and counting, Wooters now has 309 career points (167g, 142a) and is just three points away from Nazareth's all-time points mark of 312, held by Hall of Famer Bill Coons since 1989. He leads the Golden Flyers in scoring this season with 57 points on 26 goals and 31 assists.

The Golden Flyers scored nine times in the first quarter, including three each from Walter and Wooters, who added a man-up goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-0 before Elmira finally got on the board.

Wooters added another goal in the second quarter to accompany goals by freshmen Crowley and Anthony Basile as Nazareth's lead reached 13-1 by halftime.

Nazareth scored four more goals in the second half, including the fourth goal in the last two games by Longo. Crowley added his second goal of the game and sophomores Ben Bickford and Nick Rodin each tallied in the fourth quarter. Rodin's goal was assisted by freshman Ben Annal, who notched his first career point.

Nazareth also dominated statistically with advantages in shots (69-18), ground balls (62-35) and face-offs (22-3). Sophomore Seth DeLisle went 10-for-12 on draws, while sophomore Gavin Shaner and freshman Ryan Gratz went 5-for-6 and 7-for-7 respectively. Gratz also collected a game-high eight ground balls.

Junior Michael Cuciti played the first 30 minutes in goal and was credited with two saves. Sophomore Rick Kronenwett had four saves in the third quarter and freshman Robbie O'Toole made one save in the fourth.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule with a home game Saturday against St. John Fisher at 3 p.m.
