Updated Stats ROCHESTER, N.Y. – No. 1 Cortland State scored 14 first half goals en route to a 21-12 win over Nazareth Tuesday afternoon. It is the second straight loss for the Golden Flyers after beginning the season with four straight wins.
Nazareth moves to 4-2 on the season, while Cortland improves to 6-0.
Cortland scored five of the first six goals of the game to storm out to a 5-1 advantage. Nazareth responded though with three tallies in a row to cut the lead to 5-4, starting with
Haley DeVona's second goal of the game at the 24:28 mark.
Jamie Martin scored a man-up goal in the middle of the run, while
Kate Rothrock notched a tally to close the gap to one.
Nazareth scored just two more goals in the final 20 minutes,
Nicole DeVona on a free position and Rothrock unassisted, allowing Cortland to build a 14-6 halftime advantage.
After trading goals to start the second half, Nazareth chipped into the lead with a three goal stretch in a less than three minute span, with goals from Martin,
Carly Gates and
Suzie Gray.
The top-ranked team pushed back with three of their own to build an 18-10 cushion.
Mackenzie Corbett started in net for Nazareth, allowing 10 goals in 20:28 of play. Freshman
Brianna Rizzari came in relief to make five saves, allowing 11 goals.
Haley DeVona poured in three goals, while Martin, Gray and Gates each found the back of the net twice. DeVona also had four draw controls.
Rothrock finished with two goals and an assist.
Nazareth returns to action on Thursday when it will travel to The College at Brockport for a 4 p.m. contest.
