Zachary Gillard posted a career-high 16 kills for Nazareth Friday to lift the fifth-ranked Golden Flyers to a three-set sweep of Rivier in a non-conference men's volleyball match played Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium. Scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-15. Nazareth also defeated Wells in a four-set match nu scpres of 25-15, 27-25, 22-25, 25-16.
Nazareth improved to 16-3 overall and are home Saturday for a match against 13th-ranked Mount St. Joseph at 11 a.m.
Gillard's 16 kills came on 20 swings with just two hitting errors for a .700 hitting percentage. Senior
Chris Mahan added 11 kills on 17 swings for a .588 success percentage and senior
Tim Zyburt had 11 kills on 18 swings for a .556 with three service aces. Nazareth hit a robust .462 (45-9-78) for the match.
Sophomore setter
Jake Kemp contributed 38 assists and junior libero
Tom Keisling had 10 digs. Senior
Coulton Every had five kills and six blocks.
In the Wells match, freshman
Trevor Gooch also reached a career high with 13 kills, while Gillard and
Josh Hieb added eight each. Kemp had 24 assists and freshman
Tyler Farnung contributed 17 more. Junior
Kane Wittorff had five kills and seven blocks.
