ROCHESTER, NY – It was a benchmark day for the Golden Flyers, as the track and field squad opened up the indoor season at the RIT Early Season Invite on Thursday.
Samantha Goble and Matt Battaglia each were individual event winners in the 1000-meter run.
For Goble, it was her first-ever running of the 1,000, as she came in at an ECAC qualifying time of 3:10.53, nearly a second in front of the second place finisher.
Also winning on the women's side was
Jessica Hernandez in the 800-meter run (2:42.50).
Emily Soeder was a close second (2:42.77).
Maria Staehr was first in the 500 (1:23.77).
Katie Hubbard (8.65) and
Karly Keil (8.75) were neck-and-neck in the 60-meter dash, finishing in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay of Goble, Staehr,
Katelyn Ellison and
Cassie Ellis were edged by .03 (4:19.13) for the top spot by Roberts Wesleyan.
Soeder jumped to an ECAC qualifying mark with 1.55 meters to take second place.
Freshman
Brittany Travis was seventh in the shot put (9.53 meters) and fifth in the weight throw (11.94 meters).
On the men's side, the 4 x 400 relay of Battaglia, Jacob Murray, Jenoy Merchant and Nathaniel Murad claimed the top spot in 3:35.50, over three seconds ahead of RIT.
Battaglia clocked a 2:37.95 in the 1,000.
Murad also ran in the 60-meter dash, clocking a 7.51 for 11
th place and came in sixth place for the 400-meter dash (53.28).
Murray was the fourth place finisher in the 500-meter run (72.63).
Tyler Hancock and Nadeem Omar each competed in the shot put and the weight throw. Hancock was fourth in the shot put with a career-best 12.57 meter throw, while Nadeem was seventh at 10.74 meters. In the weight throw, Hancock went 14.40 meters for third place and Nadeem had a personal-best of 11.57 meters to take sixth.
Nazareth returns to action on January 14 for the Clark Invitational in Utica, NY.
