With Ithaca moving to the Liberty League next season, the teams were meeting for the final time in Empire 8 Conference play. They have now met 14 times in the E8 Tournment. The teams have been declared co-champions six times with advancement ot the NCAA Tournament usually dedcided by penalty kicks. After playing 90 minutes of scoreless soccer Saturday, the teams seemed destined for that again as they were embroiled in yet another scoreless stalemate.
That ended in the 95th minute when senior Taylor Baranowsky headed in a corner kick from the foot of Jocelyn Ravesi. The goal sent the Bombers into a frenzy and ended a Nazareth scoreless streak that extended over 1,000 minutes. Nazareth came into the game with a 10-game winning streak that included nine straight shutouts.
Nazareth's best scoring chances came early in the game as first-half shots by
Michaela Soules,
Julia Delgatti and
Laura Herman all were saved by Ithaca Keeper Stacey DiGiorgio before the midpoint of the half. Ithaca had the better of the play over the last 20 minutes of the half, but Nazareth had a 5-4 edge in shots at the break.
Neither team generated much offense in the second half as the game was played primarily between the 18-yard lines. Ithaca's Holly Niemiec had the first shot of overtime that was saved by Nazareth keeper
Brayden Dobles. Herman had Nazareth's only shot in overtime and that sailed over the crossbar.
That set the stage for the game-winning corner kick that resulted when Baranowsky dribbled the ball down the left side before in was kick away by a Nazareth defender. Ravesi then delivered the corner kick into the box and it skipped off Baranowsky's head before settling into the goal.
