ROCHESTER, NY – In a back-and–forth game, which featured 23 lead changes, Nazareth came out on top of Morrisville, 84-80,Sunday in the championship game of the Nazareth Tip-off Tournament.
Tyler Stenglein was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while
Brendan Wind joined him on the All-Tournament Team.
The Golden Flyers remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0, while Morrisville drops to 2-1.
The second half featured 13 lead changes.
Denzell Jackson knocked down two free throws and had a put-back on the ensuing possession to give Nazareth a 69-66 advantage with under five minutes to play.
Shorlty after, Stenglein converted a traditional 3-point play, followed by a
Josh Gillard 3-pointer for a 77-70 lead with just over three minutes to play.
With the lead cut to three, Stenglein split two defenders and got to the rack for an 80-75 mark with :34 seconds on the game clock.
The Golden Flyers went 5-for-5 from the line in the final minute to ice the game.
Morrisville struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 11-for-33, but seven of those field goals came from 3-point land. The Mustangs were 7-for-15 from long range in the half.
Jackson was a bright sport for Nazareth, scoring the first six points and finishing with eight for the half (4-for-6). He finished the game with 12 points and 10 boards for his first-career double-double.
Cody Green hit back-to-back 3-pointers near the midway point of the half to give Nazareth a 19-17 lead. The 3-pointers were Nazareth's only of the half.
Nazareth and Morrisiville were tied at 33 going into the break.
Stenglein scored a season-high 27 points (10-for-23) and had three assists to lead the attack.
Jake Burgio was solid all day for the Golden Flyers with 19 points (8-of-11) and grabbing 11 boards for his first-career double-double.
Brendan Wind had 10 points (4-for-11), seven rebounds and four assists.
Nazareth's next game will be in 10 days, when it will travel to Alfred State for non-conference action at 7 p.m.
