ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's basketball squad was an efficient 51 percent from the floor (29-for-57) as the Golden Flyers downed Mount Saint Mary (NY) 83-70 Saturday in its first game of the Nazareth Tip-Off Tournament. With the win, Nazareth moves onto the championship game at 3 p.m. Sunday against Morrisville State. The Mustangs defeated Valley Forge 96-94 in overtime in the other game of the day.
Nazareth improves to 2-0 on the season with the win, while Mount Saint Mary drops to 0-1.
After holding a 39-30 lead at the break,
Daniel Jacob drilled a 3-pointer at the 10:15 mark of the second half to push Nazareth's advantage to 57-46, a double digit lead that Nazareth would retain the rest of the game.
Tyler Stenglein and
Josh Gillard hit back-to-back 3-pointers at the 6:30 mark to balloon Nazareth to its largest lead of the game at 68-51.
The Knights tried to extend the game by fouling at the end, but they would never come closer than 10 points.
Nazareth started off the first half strong, shooting 50 percent (15-of-30) to build a 39-30 lead at the break.
The Golden Flyers held a slight 26-24 advantage with 5:37 remaining. Stenglein scored nine of the Golden Flyers final 13 points of the half to push the lead the nine points, the greatest margin of the half. He finished with a game-high 22 points and was just shy of a double-double after grabbing nine boards.
Point guard
Brendan Wind dished out six assists to go along with 14 points. Gillard finished with three 3-pointers en route to 12 points.
Chris Jones was 5-for-5 from the field for 10 points.
Jake Burgio notched seven points and seven boards.
