OSWEGO, NY – Junior
Tyler Stenglein scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the first half to help Nazareth open the season with a 63-57 victory over host Oswego. A year ago, Oswego advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season 22-9.
Nazareth opens the season 1-0, while Oswego drops to 0-1.
Nazareth built its biggest lead of the game with 8:33 remaining on a layup by Stenglein to make it 55-42.
Oswego, however, slowly cut into the lead. A layup from
Jake Burgio gave the visitors a 59-52 lead with 1:33 remaining.
Lakers leading scorer Brian Sortino drained three free throws after being fouled to cut the lead to 59-54 at the one minute mark.
After trading free throws back-and-forth, Sortino made one of two free throws to make it a three point game with :24 seconds remaining, but that was the last the Lakers would score.
Senior forward
Denzell Jackson closed out the game with two free throws to seal the win.
Stenglein started the game red hot for Nazareth, scoring 12 of the Golden Flyers first 16 points. Most of Stenglein's points came from jump shots in the lane, but he also had a 3-pointer. A jumper at the 6:48 mark from Stenglein tied the game at 16 apiece.
The Lakers hit a free throw at the 3:23 mark to pull within 24-23, however, Nazareth closed on an 8-0 run to open up a 32-23 halftime advantage. Freshman
Cody Green hit two 3-pointers in the final minute to spark the run.
Oswego native
Josh Gillard converted 3-of-7 from 3-point land en route to 11 points. Green added another 3 in the second half to finish with nine points.
Burgio chipped in seven points and eight boards, while
Brendan Wind notched 10 assists.
Nazareth will travel to Division I Buffalo on Thursday for an exhibition game. The game time is set for 7 p.m. at the University at Buffalo.
