UTICA, N.Y. -- Nazareth used an efficient hitting attack and strong defensive play Saturday to sweep a pair of Empire 8 Conference matches in women's volleyball. The Golden Flyers made short work of both Utica and Alfred to improve to 16-5 overall and 4-2 in E8 matches.
Nazareth defeated Utica by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-12 and Alfred by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-19. The Golden Flyers are home Tuesday for a non-conference match against Buffalo State at 7 p.m. Nazareth has won its last seven matches.
Against Utica, the Golden Flyers had 35 kills and just three hitting errors on 65 swings for a fine .492 hitting perentage. Sophomore
Kelsey Milligan had 13 kills on 16 attempts and senior
Cady Messmer combined four kill with eight aces and nine digs.
Freshman
Delaney Martin contributed six kills on 10 attempts and senior
Maureen Thayer had 25 assists and three aces.
Against Alfred, Martin posted a career-high 14 kills to go with six digs as Nazareth hit .327 overall (46-11-107). Freshman
Melissa Newcomb added nine kills and six digs and Thayer had 35 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore
Celia Cordero had a match-high 21 digs.
