ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's soccer team used a goal in each half from
Julia Delgatti to win its final Empire 8 contest of the season against Houghton Wednesday. With the win, Nazareth has secured the No. 2 seed for the Empire 8 Tournament hosted next weekend at top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology. The Golden Flyers will square off against No. 3 Ithaca on Friday, November 4
th with the game time still to be determined. Hartwick is the No. 4 seed.
Nazareth has now won nine straight contests, including shutting out their last eight opponents. For the year, the Golden Flyers have shutout 13 opponents to tie the Nazareth single season record set back in 1996.
The Golden Flyers are now 13-2-2 overall and 7-1 in Empire 8 play, while Houghton drops to 8-6-3 and 3-4-1, respectively.
Brayden Dobles earned her 11
th shutout of the season in net. Dobles has not yielded a goal since the first half of the game at Stevens Sept. 24. Her string of consecutive scoreless minutes is at 837.
The first 20 minutes saw the majority of play in between the 18 yard boxes. Nazareth was able to break through in the 19
th minute as a cross from
Michaela Soules was slightly tipped by the goalkeeper before Delgatti tapped it in for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, it appeared as if the Highlanders were going to even the score in the 54
th minute. Bailey Shattell got in behind the defense from eight yards out but her shot went just wide of the net.
Nazareth used a short corner kick to score its second goal of the game.
Laura Herman played a cross off the inbounds that Soules redirected toward the goal and Delgatti cleaned up on the back side. With the two goals in the game, Delgatti now has a team-leading 13 goals, including scoring in eight of the last night games. Soules increases her team-leading assists on the season to 10.
Dobles finished with two saves in net.
Nazareth closes out the regular season on Saturday when it will travel to Skidmore for a 12 p.m. contest.
