ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host University of Rochester rallied Wednesday from a two-set disadvantage to defeat Nazareth in a non-conference women's volleyball match at the Alexander Palestra. UR won by scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 15-13.
The Golden Flyers dropped to 18-8 overall and host a pair of Empire 8 Conference matches Saturday. They play Hartwick at 11 a.m. and Elmira at 4. UR, which won despite commiting 35 attacking errors, is 19-9.
UR's Alara Kocak had nine kills, including the match-clinching spike off a set from Megan Connor to cap a strong Yellowjacket rally. Senior
Cady Messmer led the Golden Flyers with 14 kills, while sophomore
Carmen Sapp added 12 and freshman
Melissa Newcomb had eight. Senior setter
Maureen Thayer had 40 assists and sophomore libero
Celia Cordero amassed 27 digs, the ninth time this season that she has exceeded 20 digs in a match.
Messmer had six of her kills in the opening set and the Golden Flyers benefitted from 15 UR attacking errors in the second set to take a seemingly safe 2-0 lead. Sapp had four of her kills in the fifth set and the Golden Flyers led 9-7 before UR rallied to score four straight points. Kills by Messmer and Newcomb squared the set at 11-11, but UR scored the next two points and never trailed again.
Three Rochester players had 11 kills each -- Alexandra Goldman, Clara Martinez and Beth Ghyzel -- and setter Aimee Kohler had 49 assists.
